A new 10 Year Science and Technology Plan is being developed to guide a clear vision and long-term strategy to support Western Australia’s science, technology and research capability and performance.
The Plan will help prioritise Government efforts and identify key areas for action, including funding and partnership models, and supportive institutional and policy frameworks. It will also provide a strong signal to researchers, industry, investors, workers and the community that the Government is committed to supporting scientific endeavours, generating innovative solutions to current and future challenges, and commercialising these for the benefit of Western Australians and the world.
A strong science capability, underpinned by world class research, research infrastructure, talented people, and partnerships, systems and institutions, is key to realising the State’s goals for economic development, community wellbeing and environmental stewardship, and meeting the growing challenges and opportunities facing Western Australia. It will be a key enabler of the Government’s goals around a sustainable, smarter Western Australia by 2035.
Science and Technology already plays an important role in our community, industry and workforces. This will only grow as technologies change rapidly, and our challenges from climate change to energy, food and national security to an aging population become more urgent.
Consultation Approcah
Through a 4-phase consultation plan we will engage with and across government, industry, universities and the community to develop an understanding of state of science, technology and the associated research and development in Western Australia.
Phase One
We have hosted numerous workshops across WA to identify priority areas and brainstorm an ambitious vision for the future. We spoke to more than 500 people from a diverse range of backgrounds and across numerous sectors. The Phase 1 Findings Report has informed the development of Phase 2.
Phase Two
A survey will be conducted in this phase to verify priority areas and the vision as well as to ask targeted questions about goals. Public submissions are also welcomed.
Phase Three
Themed roundtables will be held across Perth and the regions to determine key actions to support the vision and goals of the Plan.
Phase Four
A draft Science and Technology Plan will be circulated to key stakeholders in early 2024 for feedback prior to finalisation.
